It sort of began with a desire for a chocolate chip cookie. We had spent the
weekend at the beach and were packing up to go home. There had been these
delicious cookies in the fridge and only one remained. I assumed my husband packed it
up to go home but that was not the case. After arriving home, I went to seek out the
cookie for dessert. No go, left up at the beach.
In a couple days I will be traveling to Austin to visit my daughter’s family and
grandkids. I spoke to God saying that it sure would be nice to have a seat partner that
knew the Lord. A simple thought/desire that I put up to the Lord not thinking that much
more about it.
It takes two flights to get to Austin from Jacksonville. The longer second leg is about
two hours. I boarded the flight to Austin from Atlanta.
Caveat.... You have to go through Atlanta from Jacksonville to go anywhere else.
I took my seat as the man in the seat behind me waited for me to sit down as he
would be my seat partner. He was about the age of my daughters and handsome.
Lucky me.

He had a Chick Fillet lunch he was devouring as the rest of the people boarded the
flight. As we took off, I noticed he had a tattoo of the cross on his arm. He said, “ I can’t
just sit here and eat in front of you without sharing something with you. Would you like
this chocolate chip cookie?” I laughed out and told him my cookie story and what I had
asked God in regard to this trip. A big high five ensued and we began to talk about our
faith. He had been studying the book of Ecclesiastes, where King Soloman cries out,
“All is vanity.”
Soloman, a very wise and rich king realizes that everything is meaningless without a
proper focus on God. Vanity is where we put the esteem of others before God. Vanity
can also be a kind of emptiness. It was so wonderful to sit and hear a young man talk
about the teachings of Ecclesiastes.
After much conversation and laughter, we hugged goodbye.
I’m still dumb struck about this incident but knowing who my Lord is I know He has a
sense of humor and pays attention to our desires as mundane as they can seem. He’s
got bigger fish to fry, right? But these events show me how big His love is for us even in
a chocolate chip cookie and a believing seat mate.
A few Scriptures come to mind sharing about God in the seemingly “little things”.
God knows you and HE cares for you.
Psalm 139:1-4
O Lord, You have searched me and known me.
You know my sitting down and my rising up;
You understand my thought afar off.
You comprehend my path and my lying down,
And are acquainted with all my ways.
For there is not a word on my tongue,
But behold, O Lord, You know it altogether
Jeremiah 1:5
Before I formed you in the womb, I knew you, and before you were born, I
consecrated you.
Matthew 6:25
25 “Therefore I tell you: Don’t worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will
drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Isn’t life more than food and the body more than
clothing?
Luke 12:7
Why, even the hairs on your head are all numbered.
Jeremiah 31:3
The Lord appeared to us in the past, saying: “I have loved you with
an everlasting love; I have drawn you with unfailing kindness.
